A Bit About Butterflies

Butterflies and moths have a complete life cycle. What this means is that they have four separate life stages and each one looks different and has a different purpose during the cycle.

The Four Stages

  1. The egg- the egg is very small and usually has a rounded shape. It is often finely ribbed. The female butterfly attaches the egg to leaves or stems on or close to the caterpillar food.
  2. The caterpillar(larva) is the long worm like stage of the butterfly's life cycle. Caterpillars come with many different patterns and colors. They may also have spine like hairs. This is the feeding and growing stage of the cycle. during this time the caterpillar sheds its skin four times or more.

  3. Chrysalis (pupa) : this is the transformation stage. Here the caterpillar's tissues are broken down and the adult's structures are formed. In most species the chrysalis is a brown or green color so that it blends easily into the surroundings. Many of the species spend the cold winter months in this stage.
  4. Adult : the adult butterfly is also called imago. When the time is right the adult will emerge from the chrysalis. It is during this time that egg laying and colonizing occur.
